A toilet roll manufacturer has been fined £10,000 after an employee was injured while carrying out work, which may highlight the need for liabilities cover.
Phillip Evans, 43, from Maesteg, was working for Intertissue Ltd, of Brunel Way, Baglan Energy Park in Neath, when the incident took place.
Mr Evans was assisting the shift supervisor to clear a wraparound of paper from the steel roller, when his hand got caught between the upper and lower rollers of the machine.
Three of his figures were crushed during the accident, resulting in permanent damage to his left hand.
Neath Port Talbot Magistrates Court fined the company £10,000 and ordered it to pay £1,365 costs after it pleaded guilty to a charge under Regulation 11(1) of the Provisions and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
HSE inspector Stuart Charles said: "Mr Evans's injuries would have been avoided if simple precautions, in this case a machine guard, had been in place."
Earlier this week, South Ribble Magistrates Court in Leyland fined Jex Engineering Company Ltd after a worker injured his hand while using a drill.
