Prevention 'is key' for protecting home and contents

Finding the right home insurance deal is vital for people who take advantage of remote working options, as it can prepare them for every eventuality.

This is according to Carl Burton, home insurance manager for Co-operative UK, who said by having cover in place individuals can protect themselves against burglary, a flood or burst pipe.

Mr Burton went on to note those who take time to find the right cover can enjoy the piece of mind of knowing they are safeguarded against such occurrences, while also having professionals who can help them through it.

He noted insurance companies are there to "do a lot more" than simply pick up the bill if a property is damaged, with many firms sending employees to assist homeowners in securing their houses.

In addition, organisations are able to recommend trusted tradespeople to sort out plumbing and electrical issues, as well as considering the actual cost of the incident.

His comments were made after recent crime statistics highlighted a rise in petty theft and burglary has done little encourage an estimated nine million British adults to protect their possessions.

New research revealed one-in-five adults fail to seek contents insurance, leaving their most treasured belongings up for grabs as they prepare to jet off for their summer holidays.

This figure increases to more than one-in-three for under 35s, despite concerns over the theft of computers, tablet devices and laptops - something that is commonplace in the majority of home offices.

Mr Burton added: "When it comes to insurance it's really important that you take every possible step to minimise the claim in the first place.

"A good example of that would be making sure that you keep all your windows and doors locked even if you are just crossing the road to speak to a neighbour."
